Meditation’s positions

by redi on September 15, 2010

Choosing a form of meditation which is a kind of motionless meditation, seated, we face the question what position we should choose. The answer is very simple in theory – choose the position which is most comfortable for us! What position should be chosen in practice? Good position for meditation should be characterized by the following features:

  • support of our straight spine should be easy and should be the result of the same item and not from our efforts
  • easily maintained optimal level of concentration – it is difficult to meditate lying down – it is easy to fall asleep :)
  • From my personal experience – we can’t make the meditation depent on gadgets – candles, specialty pillows, chairs, etc. This will give us mobility and I assume that everything I need for meditation is always with me, I always have my body … and the Rest – it’s enough!

Beginners

For beginners it is often recommended simple positions. The simplest (the worst?) position is the seat (with straight back) on a comfortable chair or armchair. This position has several disadvantages:

  • it is difficult to find a chair (chair) provides us a perfectly straight back – personally I have found such chair for myself – maybe the solution is the position of „kneel-bend :)
  • if the position is too comfortable, we feel much more sleepy
  • when we get used to or favourite armchair we couldn’t maediate in the train or during the holidays.

After several unsuccessful attempts (sleep, boredom) with meditation on a chair (armchair), I started trying to meditate in other positions. The best for me is to „sit on my feet” :) There are of course the specific names for this position – such as Sanskrit, Yajrasana.

Description – The position of Diamond: Kneel like to prayer, then slowly sit back on your feet, placing the buttocks between the heels. Knees and toes together. Straighten your spine and pelvis. Hands on the thighs near the knees. This position has a lot of advantages for me:

  • to meditate in this position you don’t need to be specially stretched or athletic, etc.
  • you don’t need any gadgets, you can meditate anywhere
  • you can meditate for a long time – when your legs go numb :) you can get up to a kneeling position, rest a few minutes and meditate again!

Difficult positions are better (easier)!

After mastering meditation in an easy position (eg, Diamond position described above) it is worth trying the more difficult positions. Worth recommending are half-lotus and lotus positions ( Wiki ).

Because for most people, keeping the body in such a position is difficult, we need to concentrate more for the same position then it is easier to focus on meditation (less things distract us.)

Hands’ and fingers’ laying

At any position (sitting) there are now several options for laying of hands and fingers. Eg, „palms open, based on the thighs, facing upwards” or „index finger touches the thumb “.

Each „positioning” of hands and fingers is assigned a particular operation. Certainly something is in such „positioning”, but I think these are cases which have a small impact on the effect of our meditation. I would suggest the position for fingers, which suit us the best, which we „feel the most”.

Of course, the choice of the right position is an individual matter. Each of us must find the best way for oneslef. Let’s trust our intuition, then we will have the access to the knowledge which is otherwise unavailable. No books, articles, masters give us the solution. All what we need (to life, enlightenment and happiness), we have inside!
