I have a question: Well, I read in several different sources, and one teaches that during meditation you shouldn’t think about anything and you should let your imagination flow freely (like the river) and you shouldn’t concentrate on them. Other books teach that you have to choose the subject for meditation (and now what? thinking on this subject? imagine this one subject in many different ways?) How does it actually work? Please help!
The main mediation’s goal (actually it is rather the measure) – closing meditation – is not thinking.
To think on this subject?
For me, the subject of meditation is something that allows us to pay attention and to focus so hard, that you don’t think about anything else. The theme may be the movement (Tai – Chi), position (Yoga), sound (mantra), observation of our own body (such as breathing), observation of the world – for example, staring at a candle or the sunset.
What’s the difference between focusing on the topic and thinking about it. For example theme is staring at the candle. I will present a record of internal dialogue:
- concentration – fire, heat, glare, flickness ,yellow, flashing, the smell of smoke, liquidity
- thinking – “godson didn’t blow out the all of the candles on his birthcake” – damn!”, „wondering how much will cost the candles for Christmas?”, „from which the candle is made exactly?”.
But the focus (focus and not thinking about it) on the topic is only a measure, not a goal. The mind still „runs”, let’s give him something to do! Such a trick. A monkey runs all the time – let’s give it the banana, the monkey will stop running – for some time
I think we don’t have to imagine anything (the flow of the energy or other actions like that). Let’s observe our body, breath – the time will come and we will experience a feeling of peace and quiet… In the meantime, during meditation, other thoughts will appear (eg, what will be on TV today) – and let the thoughts flow freely – don’t focus on them. In this way, they don’t disturb of our state – they come and go away. As the pracitise is more frequent, the thoughts appear more rarely and they are more to the point!
I hope that I helped you
